Houses have to be at least 30 blocks to be valid. I usually go 3 x 10 for my NPC "stables." The floors require at least one solid block that is at least one space from the wall/door for the NPC to stand on. The rest can be platforms if you wish. You can put any furniture anywhere on those platforms or blocks, except chests and dressers.
