Feb 18, 2014 · My 2012 Sportsman 500HO has a three phase stator and My stepdads' pair of 2002 Polaris Professional Series 500 do as well. I'm not sure when they made the change but that manual you got the wiring diagram from goes back to 1996. I can probably safely say that anything built after 2002 or 2003 is three phase. I tested the the coil and got some readings that were slightly over what the manual says. The manual shows 0.3 ohms (Primary) and 6.3K ohms (Secondardy) but I got .4 ohms on the Primary and 6.5K on the Secondary. Replacing the whole stator requires partial engine disassembly. This is quite a task for the home mechanic, so, your ATV most likely ended up in a repair shop or at a dealership. If you are a mechanic, it’s still a chore to repair this stator problem. First problem at 1000 miles the cam wore away, a common problem, then 200 miles later the stator failed I bought the parts at discount and yes I recall the cam to be about $300 for parts and stator about $280.

If it is high 12v at the terminals the stator is basically dead.
