It's pretty easy to find the scraps in those locations. Use scanning mode and find areas with a signatures divisible by 2000. Scan using tab, hit V and point at the areas that pop up. Even the RS Signature (on the right) is divisible by 2000, then it's salvageable scrap. Just started myself and was getting frustrated too.

Because shooting the AFK pilot in the head = poor RP, poor gameplay IMHO. it's intended, the doors having so little HP that fists can open them is not. Most ships either require a shotgun or a railgun to open the doors it's great gameplay wise to disable a ship with distortions and break in with a crew.

The scanner is a problem. Half of the targets won't scan. Q-Rocks are hit or miss, you might find one around 2% (waste of time). You might find one 10% or greater as soon as you start scanning or it might take 45 minutes plus. The CIG can't do anything wrong crowd will say mining is great and doesn't need fixing but for me, mining needs fixing.Usually have to hunt around for 5-10 minutes to find one. Sometimes the distance indicator is bugged and shows 0 meters for a really far away object. Your best bet is to scan and if you get a hit regardless of distance, turn to face it and scan again. Sometimes it will correct the distance. Do the same thing if the object keeps disappearing.
Late to the party here. Your scan mode results will add up to 10,000%, or 100% after you adjust the decimal. The results are the percentages of mineable commodities in the asteroid. Your mining mode scan results display each material percentage alongside inert materials.
