I use the chaos blade a ton, but I am also a pyromancer. My best suggestion is keep warmth on you, use it when you feel you need health back. Or keep stocked on life gems and use them when you hit about half health or so. Dks2 has so many healing options, it should be fairly simple to keep your health up, thus making the weapon viable.
