Hey everyone. I just got a used axis 30-06 from a friend, and I'd like to find out the year it was made. Is there somewhere to look it up with the serial? Now here is the problem this is an older firearm before savage started using model numbers. It's last patent date is November 20, 1917! All that is stamped on the barrel is savage sporter and .22 long rifle! The serial number is below 100,000, 887XX. The closest thing I've come up with was the date code being the first two numbers of the serial number for older models and the last two numbers being the date code for later models. The rifle I was gifted only has a five digit serial number. The serial number on my first kit rifle from the 70's is 78 followed by a space and six numbers.
