If anything they diverge more as the amount of knowledge you need to practice good medicine increases, which is how all new fields of medicine develop.Even doing barebones psychiatry medication management requires a good understanding of a number of medical conditions, medication mechanisms/interactions, and screenings. Then throw in fields like Addiction, C-L, neurointerventional, ED consults, sleep med, geriatric psych, etc. and there is quite a bit of real medicine in there.

1) Offer combined acceptance into their adult residency/child fellowship and integrate the child training into the adult years. 2) Don't have an integrated track but still have a great psychiatry fellowship. Geographically, I would prefer to stay in the Midwest! I would also consider going north, south, or west.

How long it takes the student to complete their psychiatry program fully depends on the student. Granted, there are a select few students to finish earlier than expected, but the majority of most students take 12 years: 4 years of undergraduate school. 4 years of Medical School. 4 years of psychiatric residency.
