04:19 PM 1903 Springfield Barrel Marking I just acquired a really nice finger groove 03, 8439xx with a SA, the flaming bomb, then, 3/18 marked on the barrel. Centered directly under the date, on the barrel, is clearly a single letter A.SPRINGFIELD ARMORY US MODEL 1903 RIFLE SERIAL NUMBER RANGES I have no ideal what the Rock Island is about but the Remington 03A3 serial number would indicate it was made in 1942. The 'X' is 03A3 meaning it was not made early in 1942. I remembered a thread on another forum describing a USMC 1903 in detail, yours is in the serial number range and wears the same barrel so you very well may have a rifle carried by a Marine. Serial number lists of who got what do not exist, collectors have established known ranges with USMC traits.

G'Day and thanks to both Mike D and e7insalemva for the reply. 1903 barrels were all 4 groove. and contured for a rear sight base to fit tightly. 1903A3 barrels came both 2 , 4 and 6 groove, most had a heavey conture in the chamber area so that a rear sight base wont slid over.The markings on the receiver are very hard to see but it says US Springfield Armory, Model 1903, #5002.
