The comment I replied to was differentiating between "before attackers" (meaning the beginning of combat step) and "before combat". The last time before combat at which you get priority is the main phase. If it's your goal, for whatever reason, to use your priority "before combat" it's a lot easier to just say you want to do so in the main phase.
