Donald Wolheim wrote some excellent SF novels for the period. I discovered him by reading the 'Mike Mars: Astronaut' young adult adventure series when I was a kid. This was an ambitious novel for the time, and he pulled off it's concept nicely - it's a storyline that could even work today, with a bit of retooling. Perhaps as a TV mini-series.
