Try neutrals if you want to start simple. For you that means cool browns, tans, muted cool pinks, and dull purples, for eyeshadow. Brown eyeliner, brown or black mascara. This way it doesn't look like a crazy amount of makeup, and if you mess up it's not that noticeable. Great for learning.

Try the double-cleanse method: use an oil cleanser to dissolve the makeup (especially silicone based foundations and primers) and massage your face; then follow with a foamy cleanser to emulsify the oil and get everything rinsed off.
