It's not the wires that cause the zzzzt, but batteries being overcharged. The zzzzt just happens somewhere along the wiring. And while wires no longer prevent infestations, sleeping spots and animal sleeping spots do. You could just fill everywhere that doesn't have furniture with one of the sleeping spots, and it'll keep you relatively safe.

If you don't want infestations at all, you can disable them in the scenario editor. You can always use the debug tool "remove roof" to get rid of overhead mountain, if you want to cheat or have a running game. I usually build wood walls underneath so they cannot spawn at all.
