The trick seems to be, to play the game in windowed, borderless and get it working that way with the correct resolution.

Most games have moved on from borderless windowed mode now. DX12/Vulkan use flip-mode, and Windows 10 upgrades older "full-screen" games to flip-mode to enable fast alt-tabbing, too.
