The problem on my 2012 Chevy Cruze turned out to be the 2nd temperature sensor located on the passenger side of the radiator. If this sensor isn't working, the engine will overheat and the temperature gauge won't work. the sensor can be bought at O'Reily's for $13.00 and it is o.e.m. AC Delco.

The top part of the sensor was easy to get to and remove but getting to the rest from underneath was a PITA. Also had a bear of a time getting the electrical connector undone.
