Pretty sure bronze is heavier, actually. It's preferred for two reasons: It's a lot cheaper to embark with the ores for bronze and a single unit of fuel will produce eight bronze bars as opposed to four iron. On top of that, bronze is the best you'll get out of copper and tin.
