I think I'm starting to understand Stellaris. I played a lot of Civ 5 on deity, and that game is you vs the cheating computer. You have to cheese to win as the AI gets stupid bonuses. So I've taken the same approach to Stellaris, trying to find exploits, and there are a lot of explots. Two that come to mind are turning a migration policy on ...

You want to rush Synths and/or Sapient Combat Simulations. This will give you Synth pops. DO NOT GO FOR SYNTH OR CYBERNETIC ASCENSION. Keep AI Policy to servitude and basically treat your machines like crap.

If that is the case, you could always just not research Sapient Combat Computers, Synthetics, and/or Synthetic Thought Patterns, like how Egalitarian empires should avoid researching leader-enhancing techs (though, to be fair, Fanatic Egalitarian can't research either).
