The dominant mineralogy of sedimentary carbonate rocks (dolomite, calcite, quartz), defines a very simple chemical composition space. Water-bearing minerals are often absent in sedimentary carbonate rocks but do occur in their metamorphic equivalents. Talc and particularly tremolite are modally abundant hydrous minerals in many marbles (Fig. 6.3).
Chemical sedimentary rocks are formed when the water components evaporate, leaving dissolved minerals behind. Dolomite, or dolostone, is a carbonate sedimentary rock made mostly from the mineral dolomite, CaMg (CO3)2. It commonly occurs in association with limestone and shares many of the same properties, but reacts only weakly with acid. Dolomite often has a sugary texture and is typically off-white to gray in color.
