I would disagree that Fleshmonger is better than Athel and for simple reasons. While Fleshmonger's A3 AoE is technically better than Athel's, the cooldown is longer when Athel is appropriately booked. This is why he isn't quite as good in Campaign or Spider's Den. While that cooldown is only one extra turn, it is significant.Jareg Review. Dark Athel: I used her for the longest time in doom tower for the attack up passive in a quick clear 5 aoe champ team. There are better options, but she's not totally useless in hydra if you need aoe decrease speed. Other than that, she probably shouldn't leave the vault except for maybe faction wars. *edit: Missed Kunoichi.
